About the Munich Christkindlmarkt
Since 1972, the authentic Munich Christkindlmarkt has been held at Marienplatz, tracing its roots back to the 14th century. Each year, approximately 130 stalls offer a variety of goods and treats. The program traditionally includes Advent music from the Town Hall balcony, the Krampuslauf, and the “Heavenly Workshop” for children.
Located near St. Peter’s Church, the Kripperlmarkt is one of Germany’s largest nativity markets. Here, you can find everything from full nativity scenes to individual figurines and decorations. Be sure to check out the elaborate oriental and Alpine nativity scenes.
The live Advent music adds a festive musical backdrop to the Christkindlmarkt, featuring brass ensembles, choirs, and folk musicians performing German Christmas classics alongside international songs.
A beloved part of the Christkindlmarkt, this event invites visitors to join in Christmas carols near St. Peter’s Church, led by Traudi Siferlinger. Past events have featured violinist Monika Drasch and accordionist Johann Zeller. The event is inclusive, with accessible features like large-print and Braille song sheets.
One of Munich’s Advent season highlights, the Krampuslauf sees around 300 Krampuses, Perchten, and Klause making their way from Sendlinger Straße to Marienplatz. Although they look fearsome, it quickly becomes clear that they’re harmless. Organized by the Sparifankerl Pass, the 2024 event is set for December 8 at 3 PM.
Young visitors can join the Heavenly Workshop in the festively decorated Town Hall workshop room. Children aged 6 to 12 can dress as little angels and create holiday decorations with the guidance of experienced crafters.
