The six cross vaults of the Noah’s Ark Vault, painted in the 1920s, illustrate in forty-eight scenes the story of enjoyment associated with wine drinking. Additionally, the main painting at the front of Noah’s Ark depicts Noah landing on Mount Ararat and releasing his pairs of animals. The vault also features Heinrich Schlitt’s most famous painting, “The Battle of Beer Mugs against Champagne Bottles.”
Painter Heinrich Schlitt infused humor into these naive illustrations, while architect and builder Georg von Hauberisser, commissioned by the city’s administration and council members, designed the Ratskeller’s interior in the romantic, 16th-century Gothic style.
The Ratskeller was closed for three years after the 1972 Olympics for a complete renovation. Subsequent modernizations included updates in 1996 to the main guest rooms, in 1998 to the Old Cooperage, a new kitchen in 2002, the Bacchus Cellar in 2003, and the Noah’s Ark, Swamp Lounge, and Ludwig-the-First areas in 2009. More recent updates in 2015 included Jean-Claude’s Bistro, The Royal Dolores Munich Pub, and the Marienplatz entrance.
